Wednesday 14 May 2014

After another restful night, we set off again in bright sunny weather heading for our first “planned” stop at Avignon. But first we had to negotiate Lyons, a large sprawling city with, fortunately, a non-toll motorway running straight through the middle via a couple of tunnels. So we didn't see much of it! Nevertheless we saved a huge amount of time and quickly joined the Rhone river, departing the motorway but remaining close by using the N7.

Despite the ruling that all HGV’s should use the autoroutes if there is one nearby, there was a lot of heavy traffic on this road and we spent the rest of the journey in company with it. Not particularly slow, but many roundabouts and towns/villages meant we were stuck behind trucks – but we’re in no rush. Just after Valence we called in at an Intermarche for provisions and a lunch break whilst the local emergency services dealt with an accident involving a French motorhome- that’s his holiday ruined.

Now with clear blue skies, as per the forecast, a strong northerly wind had got up but the temperature was slowly increasing as we followed the Rhone towards Avignon. We had previously picked out an ACSI campsite very close to the centre and our navigation aids took us straight there. We had tried to book but were told it was not necessary and sure enough there was plenty of room so we booked in for 3 nights. Very shady, it’s not the best site we've ever been on but perfectly adequate and fantastically handy for Avignon.
