The wind finally abated during the night so the morning was
warm and sunny. Our intention now is to move deeper into Provence proper to see
some of the sights the area is well known for. From our research we are aware
that there is no way we can see everything in the time we’ve allotted so we’ll
pick just a few and leave the rest for a future visit.
So, after calling into a Lidl to stock up for the next few
days, we headed east out of Avignon taking lesser roads and particularly those
with a green line on them, denoting a scenic route. Initially we ambled along
the line of the Montagne du Luberon through lovely little towns and villages,
enjoying the gentle relaxed scenery. We did not intend to travel far today but
decided to avoid the tourist hot-spots and make for Le Lac du Sainte Croix, a
man-made lake at the western end of Les Gorges de Verdun that had appeared in a
magazine article.
A leisurely lunch overlooking the charming village of
Greoux-les-Bains before meeting the lake at Moustiers-Sainte-Marie (lovely
names these places have) which is basically where the Verdun spills out of the
gorge. Inevitably camp-sites abound here but folk still wild-camp despite
prohibition signs – but we did see the local Gendarme on his rounds! We
followed the magazine recommendation of Camping La Source, right on the lake at
Les Salles-sur-Verdun, and found a large but quiet site with all amenities with
a back gate directly into the village (which apparently is a replacement for
the original which was drowned in the formation of the lake). We’ll investigate
that later.
Meanwhile settle in, chairs out and enjoy the warm bright
sunshine for a couple of days before tackling the “Grand Canyon of Europe”.
