Saturday 10 May 2014

With Bertie checked over and loaded yesterday, all was set for an early start. We’ve decided to go straight for Eurotunnel without stopping off at Terry’s Mums halfway as we were actually there last week for a couple of days. With an early evening crossing booked we were on the road in good time, refuelling on the way out. Tesco’s latest deal on fuel saved us almost £8 – what with “free” tunnel tickets they’ll soon be paying us to go on holiday.

Little to comment on about the trip south, usual boring motorway cruising keeping to truck speeds to help the fuel consumption, though with frequent rain showers and gusty head winds we didn't do as well as of late. Stopped off at Grantham services for lunch then more boring motorways to Folkestone. Having allowed plenty of time we were nearly two hours early but check-in offered us earlier trains at no extra cost so we chose one which gave us time for a quick visit to W.H. Smith for a Rough Guide – the Spain and Portugal editions we got for Christmas were very useful.

Then round to the train with just the usual procedures and no holdups, loading almost straight away. Again an uneventful crossing and on arrival fuelled up on our way to the Port Aire for our overnight stop. It was very windy and the van was rocking a bit – then we noticed the ferries appeared to have stopped. Glad we use the tunnel!

Big bag of frites from the friterie added to pies in the oven before an early night. We've done a lot of miles today.
